Regional policing for Calgary and Edmonton not far away

May 26th 2003

(EDMONTON) Elated by today's announcement of the formation of Alberta's first regional police service, Alberta's municipal police officers assert that a Calgary and Edmonton regional police service is only a few years away.

"We expect that over the next few years more communities will opt for the regionalization of policing services," explains Sgt. Peter Kawalilak, president of the Alberta Federation of Police Associations

"It seems to be the logical way to go because it optimizes police resources and provides a broader and more equitable tax base."

The town of Coaldale announced today that it will integrate its current stand-alone police service with its Lethbridge counterpart.

"The Lethbridge - Coaldale amalgamation is probably the most significant event in the province's recent policing history," explains Sgt. Peter Kawalilak, president of the Alberta Federation of Police Associations.

"We applaud the citizens of Coaldale and Lethbridge and their respective police associations, councils and police commissions for taking such a progressive step. As well, we commend the provincial Solicitor General for conceptualizing and creating the Alberta MLA Policing Review Committee, which paved the way for public debate on regional policing."

The Alberta Federation is currently communicating with other towns in Alberta about the various policing options available to their communities. It is expected that more formalized discussions and meetings will be held this year.

"These discussions will not just involve the Federation. It is very important that the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) and Alberta Association of Police Governance (AAPG) are an integral part of these discussions," explains Kawalilak.
